Where to get a fade in West New York, NJ (a local's guide)
West New York is one square mile of dense, walkable Hudson County blocks, and there is a barber pole on almost every one of them. That is good news if you need a quick line-up before work, and confusing news if you are new to town and want a cut you can trust every month.
Tommy's Barbershop sits at 4908 Hudson Ave, a couple of blocks off Bergenline Avenue and a short walk from the Boulevard East overlook. We are open Monday through Saturday, 9AM to 8PM, and the phone is (201) 898-1393.
What a good West New York barber should do before touching your hair
Ask what you do for work and how you style it at home. A cut that only survives with a blow dryer is the wrong cut for a 6AM bus to Port Authority.
Check your growth pattern and cowlicks before picking a guard. Dense, coarse and curly hair — common across our largely Dominican, Cuban and Ecuadorian neighborhood — fades differently than fine, straight hair, and a barber who does not adjust is going to leave a hole in the blend.
Confirm the neckline and the beard line with a mirror before the towel comes off, not after.
Parking, transit and timing on Hudson Ave
Street parking around Hudson Ave and 49th Street turns over fastest mid-morning and right after 6PM. The 22, 23 and 89 bus lines all put you within a few blocks, and the Port Imperial ferry is a ten-minute ride away.
Saturdays fill up early. If you want a Saturday chair, call by Thursday. Weekday afternoons between 1PM and 4PM are the quietest stretch of the week.
How to book
We run mostly on appointments so nobody sits in a plastic chair for an hour. Call (201) 898-1393 and tell us the service and rough time you want. Walk-ins are welcome whenever a chair is genuinely open — call first and we will tell you honestly.
